Things you should know before purchasing a water filter: part 3

Carbon Filters

In the process of water treatment, carbon filters are usually used to get rid of impurities and dangerous chemicals. They are well suited to this task due to the fact that their many pores allow for easy absorption of unwanted particles. These chemicals can include pesticides or fertilizers. Furthermore, carbon filters also get rid of chlorine, bad taste and bad odours from the water. Carbon filters are made of materials with a high carbon content, such as charcoal, coconut shells and wood.

There are two types of carbon filters.

  1. Granular Activated Carbon or GAC. GAC filters are made up of little carbon balls that help the flow of the water in the filter.
  2. Activated Carbon Block. This filter is made up of fine little pieces of carbon which has been pressed and molded to form a solid carbon block. This helps remove more impurities, as the water spends more time in contact with the carbon due to its higher surface area.
