UF or Ultrafiltration filter Part 10

UF filters are made up of hollow fiber membranes, which are made up of thin strips of various materials, (Hollow Fibers). These fibers are able to separate water from small molecular substances. When water flows past the filter, bacteria and viruses become stuck in the membrane, and is therefore removed. The basic concept of the UF filters filter is the same as the RO filter, the only difference is that UF filters are able to remove smaller impurities.

Advantages of a UF Filter

  • Doesn’t require electricity to operate
  • Is able to work in a low water pressure environment
  • Is able to filter muddy water. UF filters are able to get rid of mold and bacteria, whereas other filters such as the UV filter won’t be able to filter out muddy water
  • Bacteria and viruses won't be killed in the filtering process, instead, they will become trapped in the membrane of the filter. This means that bacteria and viruses will be removed completely, whereas in other filters, the dead bacteria are still present in the water
  • The membrane of the UF filter could be cleaned and reused multiple times, as the process of filtering does not damage the membrane

Disadvantages of a UF Filter

  • UF filters won’t be able to filter groundwater that contains a lot of soluble substances
  • The membrane would have to be cleaned regularly in order to get rid of substances that become trapped inside the membrane
